Early Life and Accession to the Throne : Chhavva .The Story Of A Sambhaji

Sambhaji Maharaj was born to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his first wife Saibai Nimbalkar in 1657. Sambhaji was trained to be a warrior and future king since childhood. Sambhaji was trained in the middle of the Marathas’ glorious martial and cultural tradition by being taken on campaigns frequently by his father and learning war science.

When Shivaji Maharaj passed away in 1680, Sambhaji took over as the leader of the Marathas. But his own reign was also characterized by ruthless external and internal resistances.

The Mughal Challenge:

In 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj was betrayed by his own men and imprisoned by the Mughals after years of resisting Mughal armies. Aurangzeb, in an attempt to break the Marathas’ spirits, ruthlessly tortured Sambhaji. But never did he compromise and stood steadfast even in death, refused Islam conversion or defected his nation. He was brutally murdered on 11 March 1689, and mutilated.

Legacy

The martyrdom of Sambhaji Maharaj was a reason for rebellion against the Marathas. His refusal to retreat and his sacrifice are an inspiration to generations of men to this day. Although his reign was very brief, Sambhaji’s leadership was instrumental in the Maratha Empire’s survival, which would continue resisting Mughal imperialism for the next few years following his martyrdom.

His memory is recalled not just for his warlike character but also for administrative ability and for helping the Maratha empire acquire its military organization. He saved the dignity of his father’s empire from the deep setbacks he had to endure.
